Call for vignettes/ cartoons 💥

Despite the incredible achievements GEARING has achieved over the past few years, not everything has been smooth sailing. The most common challenges the project has faced have been a lack of interest in gender mainstreaming and a lack of will at the level of upper administration to implementing gender equality plans.

When facing these resistances, the consortium decided to take on a strength based, positive approach which is much more productive than calling out these resistances. One way, GEARING Roles has done this is by creating the Humorarium. This emerged following a conversation between the University of Deusto and Yellow Window, on the potential of the so-called “feminist humour” to counter-argue or counteract “sexist humour”.

They came to the conclusion that humour can be a useful tool to encourage reflection on inequalities and the impact of gender stereotypes. However, in academia – as in other areas – humour has also been used to belittle and devalue gender studies, the work done by women and their complaints about gender stereotypes and biases in academia.

There are previous experiences of other projects such as the project “Did this really happen? later translated into a paper (Marie Bocher et al.  “Drawing everyday sexism in academia: observations and analysis of a community-based initiative” (2020) or the EU Funded project FESTA.

Based on the work developed in GEARING Roles our aim is to produce a toolkit to support those that wish to use humour to counter resistances as well to raise awareness for gender inequalities, particularly in the context of the academia. The toolkit will consist of identified arguments with vignettes and/or other artistic work around those, using humour.

In light of this, we are launching a “call for vignettes“. The selected vignettes will receive 300€ each and will be included in our toolkit. The vignettes created should be open to share and under creative commons license. We will also launch a social campaign where we will tag the authors in the different posts and events.

Deadline for the submission of vignettes: 30th November.
